Program Description

Goal:

The Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA) recognizes the continuing need for education for Clinical Research Professionals responsible for the activities at the research site or institution. The topic of financial practices and business processes continues to be a challenge for clinical research sites. The purpose of this workshop is to assist Site Managers, Site Coordinators and Research Associates in improving their skills and their understanding of the practical financial and business tasks related to clinical research. This workshop will focus on providing tools and techniques that the participants can immediately utilize to benefit their clinical research programs.

Objective:

The goal will be accomplished through lecture, case study, practical application and hands-on experimentation facilitated by experienced clinical research professionals. Information and practical application recommendations will be discussed regarding all of the functions of the research site related to finance, productivity, budgeting, billing, and executive reporting.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course the attendee should be able to:

  • Describe the role of financial management in medical research
  • Discuss current trends in the clinical research industry
  • Describe the role of the sponsor in the clinical research industry
  • Explain effective processes for implementing billing systems and assuring billing compliance including relevant CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) billing regulations
  • Demonstrate an ability to conduct billing analysis on research protocols
  • Describe techniques for assessing study costs and reviewing sponsor budgets
  • Demonstrate an ability to calculate the complete cost of a research study
  • Describe tools to assist in clinical trial budget negotiation
  • Describe the budget negotiation process
  • Describe methods of protecting your research program through budget negotiation
  • Discuss revenue recognition models and tools
  • Describe methods for assessing study performance and revenue position and enhancing cash flow
  • Demonstrate an ability to conduct real-time research revenue recognition, reporting, and invoicing of sponsors
  • Discuss issues and challenges related to managing expenses at the clinical research site
  • Describe methods of calculating profitability of a clinical research program
  • Discuss management concepts related to enhancing productivity of research programs
  • Describe issues related to reporting results of a research program to executive management
  • Demonstrate an ability to collect data and develop a status report

Faculty Biographies

Andrew Snyder, MBA, FACMPE, PMP
Andrew Snyder is the financial director of the clinical research division at the St. Paul Heart Clinic and a fellow (FACMPE) in the American College of Medical Practice Executives. Mr. Snyder has a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) and master’s certification in Information Systems (MIS). Additionally, Mr. Snyder is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). With the support of the practice director and physicians, Mr. Snyder and the research program have implemented a series of processes that are based on the latest management, finance and information technology techniques. These tools have dramatically improved the productivity and operational performance of the Research Investigators and Nurse Coordinators.

Jim Simmer, MBA, RN
Site Manager and Industry Consultant, Performance Research
Jim Simmer is founder and President of Performance Research a clinical research consulting company whose mission is to assist physicians develop clinical research programs based on sound structure, consistency, efficiency and accountability. Prior to founding Performance Research, Jim held positions as a Clinical Research Associate then project manager in the Pharmaceutical Industry. After obtaining his MBA from Temple University, he was Research Director within a large Medical Center as well as a physician private practice.

Jim has been recognized nationally as well. He has been selected to speak to Physician Investigators at the 2007 Association of Clinical Research Professionals National conference to present an informative talk entitled “Profiting from Your Clinical Research Investment: A Site’s Perspective,” and has conducted numerous presentations on behalf of Sites and the Pharmaceutical Industry.
