Complementary and Alternative Therapies: Using Reporting Standards for Nonpharmacologic Trials to Explore Research Design Issues

This presentation will provide a brief overview of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and challenges encountered in designing clinical trials of these therapies. Differences between drug trials and CAM trials will be highlighted using reporting standards specific to nonpharmacologic trials, which include additional elements to be considered when designing such studies. The focus will be on mind-body intervention studies, with examples drawn from meditation and yoga trials. A basic meditation technique will be presented, giving attendees an opportunity to gain direct experiential knowledge of a mind-body intervention used in clinical trials. 529
