SOCRA’s 2024 Annual Conference: Connection, Inspiration, and Innovation in Clinical Research

From September 27-29, 2024, clinical research professionals from around the world gathered in Las Vegas, NV for the SOCRA Annual Conference, a premier event dedicated to advancing knowledge and connections within our industry. Led by SOCRA Board President Laura Holtz, the conference offered attendees an immersive experience with highlights ranging from skill-building sessions to networking events and engaging keynote presentations. In reflecting on the event, Laura shared insights into the standout moments and key innovations that made this year’s conference a memorable and impactful gathering.

A Warm Welcome & Vibrant Community Connections

The 2024 annual conference began with a welcoming address by Laura Holtz and outgoing President Jessica Rowe, who encouraged attendees to embrace the event as an opportunity to build meaningful connections and reconnect with the purpose behind their work. Laura emphasized setting intentional goals for the conference—whether by connecting with colleagues, gaining new insights, or gathering strategies to implement in their own programs. “Being purposeful about why you’re there makes a huge difference,” she noted, reflecting on the positive feedback received from attendees who appreciated this intentional approach to networking and learning.

The conference’s “Night Out” at the Westgate Cabaret was a crowd favorite, blending professional camaraderie with an evening of fun and relaxation. With a lively Soul of Motown show and an atmosphere of celebration, the event allowed attendees to unwind and celebrate their shared commitment to clinical research. “It was a chance to rejuvenate and connect as industry peers and friends,” Laura recalled.

Highlights of 2024: Unforgettable Sessions and New Offerings

This year, Laura embraced the role of attendee rather than session leader, immersing herself in the wide array of presentations and discussions. She was especially proud to support speakers and emerging leaders from her local Indiana SOCRA chapter, who shared their expertise on key topics in clinical research. Laura highlighted standout presentations, such as Layla Baker’s session on study closeout and Cynthia Holladay’s talk on protocol training across multi-site studies. “These and many other sessions showcased the practical and impactful work of SOCRA members, empowering attendees with ideas and skills to grow in their careers,” said Laura.

In a significant expansion of its inclusivity efforts, SOCRA introduced a Spanish-language track, offering breakout sessions presented in Spanish. “We were thrilled to welcome Spanish-speaking presenters and create a dedicated track for our global members,” Laura shared. High engagement in these sessions, including Dr. Ignacio Garrido-Laguna’s impactful talk on patient-centered dosing in Phase I trials, underscored the importance of language inclusivity and SOCRA’s commitment to representing diverse perspectives.
