The Research Nurse position will be primarily responsible for coordinating patient care activities to facilitate the patient’s progress throughout the course of the research protocol.

Determine pre-study requirements. Evaluate patient eligibility for clinical trial participation. Recruit and register patients for appropriate clinical trial. Initiate and complete required forms for participation. Obtain informed consent. Plan and coordinate care per clinical trial protocol. Identify the needs of patient/family and encourage compliance through education.

Gather data per protocol requirements. Compile research data and prepare data for event verification and site visits by sponsor representatives.

Coordinate patient and physician schedules for patient visits. Schedule patient visits with collaborating departments. Schedule lab procedures for specimen collection and review.

Venipuncture and processing to obtain serum samples. Obtain tissue, blood, and urine samples. Spin, centrifuge, freeze and ship samples per protocol requirements.

Follow up telephone contact between clinic visits as needed to evaluate patient status. Provide support to patient/family including education, emotional support/encouragement, reinforce and clarify previous information, provide updates in progress toward the protocol objectives.

Attend conferences, workshops and meetings for each clinical trial to insure accurate information and continuing participation. Participate in site visits, both virtual and in-person, from study monitors, local IRB and clinical trial sponsors to confirm status and enrollment accuracy. Resolve patient queries from monitors and submit all documentation to IRB for good clinical practices.

Monitor lab values and coordinate patient care as needed in conjunction with Principal Investigator.

Administration and adjustment of study medication.

Act as consultant/resource person within the area of expertise to colleagues, allied personnel, patients and families. Maintains clinical competence and theoretical expertise through formal and informal continuing education in school of medicine, hospital and community.
