Learning Objectives:
This presentation provides an overview of key historical events that shaped modern ethical standards in clinical research. It traces the evolution from early, often unethical studies to the establishment of formal ethical principles and regulatory frameworks. Topics include the Nuremberg Code, the Declaration of Helsinki, the Belmont Report, and U.S. regulations such as the Common Rule. Case studies such as the Nazi experiments, the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, and the Willowbrook Hepatitis Study illustrate how ethical lapses led to lasting reforms. Attendees will gain an understanding of how these milestones inform today’s requirements for informed consent, respect for persons, beneficence, and justice in human subjects research.
