Breaking Into Clinical Research: What Actually Works (and What Doesn’t)

Speaker: Brittany Ishmael, Clinical Research Consultant, Knoxville, TN

Brittany Ishmael is a clinical research professional with over 18 years of experience across site, CRO, and sponsor environments, supporting studies in oncology, dermatology, cardiology, and gastroenterology.

What makes Brittany’s perspective unique is how she entered the field, not through a traditional path, but as a clinical trial participant. That experience shaped her understanding of the industry from both the patient and operational side.

Over the course of her career, she has led clinical operations efforts, supported inspection readiness, and worked closely with sites and sponsors to navigate complex study challenges. She is known for translating clinical research concepts into practical strategies, especially for those looking to break into the industry.

Objective(s):

1. Identify the most realistic entry paths into clinical research based on their current background.
2. Separate common myths from what actually leads to getting hired
3. Reframe their experience to better align with clinical research roles
4. Decide which training or certifications are worth pursuing, and which can wait.
5. Leave with a practical, immediate plan to start moving into the field

Continuing Education (CE): SOCRA members who meet the required minimum of 50 minutes of attendance for a one-hour meeting will receive 1 CEU. The SOCRA Executive Office will email attendance certificates to members.

RSVP: Details for virtual attendance will be sent to all attendees who RSVP. Remote site agreements are NOT required for this chapter meeting.
