Laura Carr has a strong passion for health literacy that started when she learned she had the BRCA1 gene in 2014. Since then, she has become the in-house plain language expert at Fred Hutch, where she trains staff on how to effectively communicate with patients and families so they can understand and act on health information. She manages Patient Education, the Resource Center, Interpreter Services, and the Clinical Learning Management System for Fred Hutch Cancer Center. She is also former chair of the Cancer Patient Education Network and most recently co-chaired the 2024 International Cancer Education Conference.
During this presentation, you will learn current information about health literacy, the key types of information people want to learn during visits with clinician, and strategies to communicate clearly with patients.
