Topic: Project Management of Clinical Trials at the Research Site

Speaker: Laura Holtz, MS, PMP, CCRP;

               Senior Quality Specialist, Yale Cancer Center,

               Clinical Trials Office, Yale University

Overview: The goals of clinical trials, as outlined by the National Institutes of Health, are to learn about disease and improve health care for people in the future by gaining generalizable knowledge.  However, the clinical research trials activities are often co-mingled with the clinical operations and may not be clearly delineated for the participants or clinical providers.  Often research activities happen in parallel with usual care procedures.  And in some situations, the clinical trial interventions may be halted quickly if the risks are determined to be too great to the subject for the trial to continue.  For these reasons, the effective management of a clinical trial can be complex and may require adaptation during the course of the project. Utilization of project management principles may contribute to the successful execution of clinical trials at the research site.

Objectives:

  • Describe how project management principles are applied to clinical site operations and trial protocols
  • Evaluate key project management concepts including project planning, budgeting, scheduling, monitoring, and required reporting for adverse events which occur in clinical trials.
  • Discuss project management tools for successful execution of clinical site-specific activities in clinical research.

Continuing Education (CE): SOCRA members may claim 1.0 CE credit per hour of education and will receive Certificates of Attendance at the completion of the event.
